Kevin Profitt-Assistant Program Director

Kevin has spent most of his 26 year radio career right here on 98fm KCQ. KP's first day at KCQ was the day a brand new (and then unkown) band was visiting the studio to promote an upcoming concert. That group was called Alabamba and that concert at the Saginaw Civic Center just days later drew less than 1000 people! KP was hosting a tour of KCQ listeners at Fan Fair in Nashville the day Garth Brooks received his first platinum album awards. He has taken part in WSAM Raft Races and was there when that event morfed into the present day KCQ Country Music Fest Free Concert. Alabama has since retired from country music but KP still keeps brining you Today's Best Country on 98fm KCQ.

Tune in to win playing KCQ Paul Harvey Pop Quiz with Kevin every day beginning at noon.

    | 10:22 am

It started when Marc Beaudin at Pit & Balcony Theatre in Saginaw asked me to be the "sound tech" for the play Amadeus. Marc will be directing the show in addition to his official duties as theatres Technical Director. You oughta see the working forte piano Mark constructed for the set!

I was approached for the job, Marc says, because of my background in radio. He reasoned that since I've spent nearly thirty years mixing music in one form or another, that I might have the know how to build the complex music and sound pieces that he envisions. There are ordinary sound effects like clocks chiming the hour and at one point a murder of crows will fly over the heads of theatre goers. Most impressive however is the music mix. As mentioned, the forte piano really works and music magically escapes from Mozart's manuscripts.

I agreed to the job follwing the logic that, unlike having a role in play, the demands of sound tech would not be as great. I figured I could pop into rehearsals every once in a while to observe how things had progressed and see what sounds needed to be acquired, made or edited for next time. There is a lot to do in the spring time at the radio station... KCQ Country Music Fest preparations and promotion... Great Lakes Loons specials... KCQ Easy Money and other cash giveaways. I just couldn't afford to devote the amount of time necessary as someone who was playing a part in the play. I made that very clear to Marc and let him know I would stand firm in that decision.

So of course now I'll playing the role of Chamberlain von Strack... "a court official to his collar bone." The show opens Friday, May 16th. You can buy tickets on-line at the Pit & Balcony web site. Just make sure you ask for seats outside of the crow fly-zone if you know what I mean.

    Cheers,
    Kevin

SIDEBAR: I found out that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote one of his serenades for the benefit of Chamberlain von Strack. Serenade in Eb major K375 was composed in 1781 and was intended to curry favor with Herr von Strack. In a letter to his father, Mozart writes...

I wrote it for St Theresa’s Day, for Frau von Hickel’s sister, or rather the sister-in-law of Herr von Hickel, court painter, at whose house it was performed (October 15, 1781) for the first time. The six gentlemen who performed it are poor beggars, who however, play quite well together, especially the first clarinet and the two horns. But the chief reason why I composed it was in order to let Herr von Strack, who goes there every day, hear something of my composition; so I wrote it rather carefully.

About two weeks ago I entered three of my home brewed beers in the Homebrew Competition at the WEB, the first ever such competition for home  brewers at the World Expo of Beer. The judging was held the weekend of April 12, 13 and the results announced just recently.

There were 223 beers entered from 78 brewers in 11 states. Not bad for a first year event. For those unfamiliar the wide variety of beers available, there are currently 28 separate styles that are recognized and judged in these competitions. I entered category 10 - American Pale Ale (so did 23 other brewers!). My second entry was a Stout which is category 13... 15 brewers entered this category. The last beer I entered was again one of 15 entries in category 14 - India Pale Ale.

Drum roll please.... I got snubbed in all three categories. Zip, zilch, nada, nothing, the big goose egg...not even an honorable mention.

Fortunately for me, none of my friends are certified beer judges... they all think the beers I give them are great.

    Cheers,
    KP

PS. My homebrew club will be making beer at the World Expo of Beer in Frankenmuth May 16 & 17. Stop by and see how it's done... maybe even try a sample!

  • I did it
    | 11:18 am

I have entered three of my beers for judging in the home brew competition at this years World Expo of Beer in Frankenmuth!

I have been brewing for a dozen years or longer and always wondered how my beers would stack up against others. So when they announced last spring that the World Expo of Beer would host a home brew competition in 2008 I had to try it.

The competition is being run by the Cass River Homebrewers Club, of which I am a member, and at last nights club meeting I turned in a Foreign Extra Stout and a Rye India Pale Ale. I also have an American Pale Ale which just came out of the fermenter a week ago. It needs time to carbonate and isn't ready to turn in right now... but if it becomes ready before the entry deadline of April, 11 I will enter that one too. (I hope it's ready... I've already paid the entry fee!)

The Foreign Extra Stout is a dark, robust beer with lots of rich, malt flavor and just enough hops to keep it from being overly sweet. Most people think of Guinness when they think of Stout beers but Guinness is a Dry Stout which is much milder than what I have created.

In an India Pale Ale, or IPA, it is hops that is king. An IPA is normally a warm, golden amber in color with a clean, crisp taste. The flavors are practically reversed from that of the Stout... the malt is detectable only faintly and it is the bitter, tongue curling bite of the hops that give this beer its uniqueness. My IPA has had several pounds of rye malt added to the barley malt which adds an additional zing to the flavor.

    (Kevin's Foreign Extra Stout pictured)

Finally, an American Pale Ale, or APA, is a fairly common ale style you might find in any brewpub or micro brew. These beers are amber in color and are smooth drinkers. Its a beer you would go for on a hot summers day when you want something clean and refreshing. The malt character is full and noticable but not heavy or overly sweet. The hop bitterness is also up front and present but not overly bitter. If the IPA sounds too aggressive for your tastes but you'd like to try a hoppy-er style of beer, this would be the one.

The first two entries were a hit at last nights meeting. Even the most experienced members said "yeah, that's one that I would enter." So while I don't expect much, this being my first competition, I am encouraged and hopeful.

Wish me luck and look for my name on the medal board at this years World Expo of Beer!

    Cheers,
    Kevin

  • Bad Vacation
    | 10:55 am

It's been about 6 months since I took a day off so I was really looking forward to a week of vacation the first week of February. Then the pnone call came... my sister-in-law from Alabama... my mother-in-law had died. We just buried my wifes father last April. Now ten months later we were in the same funeral home and the same cemetary laying new flowers on the same grave site. Not a happy vacation.

Just a quick reminder that there are some shows coming up you won't want to miss.

Tonight (01/25) is the KCQ Karaoke Competition at Zehnder's Snowfest in Frankenmuth. The level of talent at these things have been simply amazing. Last years winner was discovered by a major Nashville record company and went on to sell 57 million albums. That... that's a complete dramatization of course but they are good.

Valentines night is when Trace Adkins and Kellie Pickler plan to blow the roof of of TheDow Event Center. The more I hear Kellie Pickler speak the more I respect her as a person... just yesterday she was speaking to an interviewer about the bad behavior of certain celebrities and Kellie said...
"You are who you are because you choose to be that way". Imgagine that, taking responsibility for ones own actions. Kudo's to you Kellie for your common sense.

Our good buddy Dierks Bentley returns to mid Michigan on February 21st at the Palace of Auburn Hills. The last time he was here was at TheDow and we held our pre-concert tail gate party in the parking lot because the Mayor's Ball was going on in the atrium. Not to be deterred we put up a tent... borrowed a gas grill and served hot dogs, chips and pop. It was a blast! (PS. it's John Richards birthday too!)

Then the very next night (02/22) Bucky Covington will play in a very cozy setting at The Machine Shop, 3539 S. Dort Hwy. in Flint. There's only room for about 500 people so you will be very close to the stage with clear views and ample opportunity to catch Bucky's eye. Don't expect to sit down... this aint no concert venue... it's a party! Keep in mind that this is an adult venue. Alcohol will be served. Smoking is allowed. Party poopers beware. (PS. it's Kevin Profitt's birthday too!)

And the headliner for this years KCQ Country Music Fest is... yeah, right.
Be aware that the date for this years KCQ CMF is Saturday, June 21st. Make your vacation requests and plan your weddings and graduation open houses accordingly.

    Cheers,
    Kevin

  • I CAN'T HEAR YOU!
    | 12:53 pm

Some of you may have noticed that KCQ is not coming in as strong as usual. That would be a result of the fire.

Oh, don't worry... it was outdoors and more of an electrical short than an actual fire. But as a result we've had to shift to our back up equipment and that means reduced reception in some areas.

Rest assured our engineering wizards are on the job and will have us back to normal in no time.

    Thank you for your patience.

    Cheers,

  • Making Beer
    | 1:10 pm

Last weekend with a winter storm warning in effect I decided to make beer. The day started off in the low 20s and never got any warmer than the low 30s. I used my little Flip Video gizmo to document the day. Take a look.

This weekend it supposed to be near 50°. I may just break out the BIG brew system and make a 10 gallon batch!

  • Holidays
    | 3:14 pm

Wow! Where did they go? The last thing I rememer I was shopping and now I look around to see under the tree is bare... my wife is already returning my gift... and my kid instead of saying things like "what can I get for you Daddy?" is standing with her hand out expecting gas money.

I'll tell you, I am really looking forward to this weekend. For once I have no play to rehearse for... no shopping malls to fight through... no long drives to visit relatives... no big meals to cook and clean up after. I finally have a weekend to do what I like to do best on weekends... make a batch of beer.

So here's hoping that you had a great Christmas holiday and as the new year approaches you find some time to do the things you love to do most.

    Happy New Year,
    KP

  • Beer
    | 1:37 pm

Some of you may know that one of my hobbies is making beer. Christmas is one week from today and if you are stuck for a gift to give a loved one... and that someone loves beer... why not get them a beer making starter kit?

I shop online at Northern Brewer and they have beginner kits for under 80-dollars. Locally I shop at Opperman Cork n' Ale on Midland Rd. (M-47) just north of Saginaw Twp. They should be able to fix you up with a basic set up at a reasonable price. Plus they stock all the ingredients you'll need and can answer any questions you might have.

The first question anyone asks is always... isn't it difficult?? The answer... not at all! If you can boil water you can make beer. Here's the quick and easy rundown of a beginners brew day -

    • Bring 2 - 3 gallons of water to a boil
    • Add malt extract (comes in a can)
    • Add hops (comes in pre measured packages)
    • Boil this mixutre for 60 minutes
    • Cool and pour into a fermentation bucket (comes in the kit)
    • Top of with enough clean, cool water so that you have a total of 5 gallons
    • Add the yeast - cap the bucket and set it aside for a week or two
    • Bottle and let carbonate (another week or two) then refrigerate and drink!

It doesn't have to be any more difficult than that. Of course like any hobby it can grow as your skill level increases. But a beginner using extracts and basic equipment can make very good beer. Give it a try!

    Cheers,
    Kevin

PS. I just posted some new pictures of my front porch brewery on myspace.

When I got bit by the theatre bug I got bit hard. Since that first play just over two years ago I have become a board member at Pit and Balcony Theatre and chairman of their marketing committee. I have auditioned for and earned roles in three more plays and audtioned for and been turned down for a few others. I have  been an usher at some shows and worked backstage and in the controll booth for others. Is that bit or is that bit?!

My current show is Beauty and the Beast and the only bad news is that if you don't have a ticket you won't see it. It sold out almost two weeks before it opened. I will post a slideshow of pictures and maybe even a short video clip in the coming days so check back.
